Allow me to expand on my opinions / thoughts on the question of "is counter-intuition a cousin of anomaly detection?" I don't think so. For me, counter-intuition is but a superficial reflex, but the underlying "truth" or "knowledge" is sound and not an outlier or exception.
I sort of stumbled into the 2 categories of intuition during the writing process as I realised that I could not unite the differences. One was a pre-programmed reflex that leads to error while the other was a sensitive to small information signals that leads to better decisions. I was not convinced the roots were the same.
Nonetheless, I do agree with you that hard data has a place in each of these 2 categories, and these moments of counter-intuition are opportunities for deeper analyses and critical exploration.
